What is Hospice?

Hospice is a comprehensive, holistic program of care and support for terminally ill patients and their families. It is the time when we come alongside patients and families to ensure the patient has comfort care for pain relief and symptom management, instead of care to cure the patient’s illness. Patients in our care have selected treatment for their terminal illness that has a medical prognosis of 6 months or less to live if the illness runs its normal course.

Our hospice service exists to focus on the quality of life instead of trying to cure a disease.

WHO DECIDES ABOUT HOSPICE
You make the decision about hospice care. The decision is made together with you, your physician, and your loved ones. Once you begin hospice, you can decide to stop care anytime if you change your mind or seek treatments to cure a life-limiting illness.
WHEN IS IT TIME FOR HOSPICE

Although there is not a specific “time” for hospice, there are signs and stages during terminal illness that the need for hospice arises. Choosing hospice is very personal but very important in making the difference in the care of comfort when a cure is not on the horizon.

  • A doctor has certified the patient has six months or less to live if the condition/disease follows its normal course
  • Recent and/or aggressive decline in health in spite of treatment.
  • Recent diagnosis of late-stage terminal illness.
  • Inability to perform daily living tasks
  • Symptoms are increasingly harder to manage and/or frequent hospitalizations or trips to the ER
  • The family and medical providers are no longer to provide care for the patient
  • Confused, restless, inability to communicate
  • Significant weight loss, and body changes
  • Deciding to focus on the quality of life rather than continued aggressive treatments

There are many indicators that may point toward the need of hospice and should be discussed with your physician.

When Quality of Life is the Most Important Thing

A clear sign of hospice readiness is when patients and their loved ones want a better qualify of life with comfort than a focus on curing their diagnosis. Everyone can appreciate the gift of time that allows them to reflect, make peace and create memorable moments.

The decision to enter into hospice care can provide both the patient and loved ones the assistance they need from healthcare professionals, caregivers, and a team trained to manage patient care and decline.
